A sterling silver traprain spoon.

The spoon is a reproduction of a Roman spoon that was part of the Traprain Law treasure hoard discovered at Traprain Law near Edinburgh in 1919, and has a large egg shaped bowl , and a short curved handle with a figural terminal of a serpent or bird’s head holding a seed in it’s bill.

The spoon is fully hallmarked with the makers mark for Brook & Son (who operated from 87 George St, Edinburgh – now Hamilton & Inches)

Hallmark for Edinburgh 1938

The hoard dated to around 400 AD, and William Brook was the silversmith involved in conserving and reconstructing the original pieces. He was granted permission to allow Brook & Son to produce authorised reproductions, of which this is one. The originals are now displayed at the National Museum of Scotland.
